Dan 5:12 (KJV) “Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, ... were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.”
The man, Daniel, was said to be a man of “an excellent spirit”; what does this mean? An “excellent spirit” can refer to a mindset or an attitude of exceptional diligence, integrity, and a commitment to excellence in all endeavours. It is about consistently striving for the best possible outcome in all we do. Excellence is about a continuous journey of growth and improvement. A man with an excellent spirit forbids mediocrity and laziness; he does whatsoever he does “not with eyeservice”, or “as men-pleasers” but “as to the Lord, and not to men” (Eph. 6:6-7).
Now, an excellent spirit makes a man to be preferred or favoured amongst his peers. The Bible says, “Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him” (Dan 6:3). Daniel distinguished himself above others by an excellent spirit; he proved himself to be a better supervisor than any of the others.
