God’s Covenant Plan for You & Me”
Genesis 12:2 (KJV) “... I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great ...”
Our Scriptural text is God’s promise to Abram (later Abraham). The LORD God took the initiative to bless Abraham without a request from him. The manifestation of the blessing will include protection, provision, fruitfulness, and favour. But then, the LORD said to Abraham, “I will make thy name great”. In the biblical sense, a “great name” points to honour and influence. Abraham would become the father of nations, respected across generations and faiths. Now, a “great name” equals a “good name”, and “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches ...” (Pro. 22:1). Also, “A good name is better than precious ointment” (Eccl. 7:1). When your name is as a sweet smelling perfume poured out, it will attract the love and favour of many people (Songs of Solomon 1:3). Your name is your “legacy” and your “character” determines your true name.
Now, this promise of God to Abraham reveals God’s covenant plan for every believer in Christ Jesus. It is God’s plan that we all be men of HONOUR and INFLUENCE. The Almighty God wants us to be “influential” and “prominent” people in this world. That is what it means to “subdue and have dominion over everything upon the earth” (Gen. 1:28), all to the glory of God; we should not be nonentities in this present world. In every sphere of life, we should dominant by the wisdom of God at work in us and through us.
