Psalm 45:7 (KJV) “Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows”
In our previous exhortation, we mentioned that “love for righteousness” and “hatred for wickedness” are two important character traits that we must possess as Christians. These character traits in any man will attract the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon such life, setting him apart for divine empowerment unto every good work. 2Timothy 2:21 says, “If a man therefore purge himself from these (youthful lusts), he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.”
Now, in Israel, kings and priests were anointed with oil as a sign of being chosen and empowered by God. Jesus Christ, the sinless One, is called the Messiah, meaning, the Anointed One. Acts 10:38 says, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power…” An effect of the anointing is gladness – “the oil of gladness”. Remember, the joy of the LORD is your strength (Neh. 8:10). Another effect of the anointing on a man is divine exaltation or lifting – “above thy fellows.”
