Divine Precious See
Ephesians 4:30 (KJV) “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
The Apostle Paul wrote the Epistle to the Ephesians while imprisoned in Rome. Now, In Greco-Roman religion, spirits were thought of as impersonal forces or deities. But Apostle Paul revealed that the Holy Spirit is a person, a loving Being who lives within believers in Christ Jesus; He is not a force to be manipulated. This means that the Holy Spirit has emotions, and He is relational. Anyone who will enjoy the privilege of “walking in the Spirit” must see to it that he or she does not grieve the Holy Spirit. This is because the success of our daily living will depend on the Holy Spirit; we cannot afford to offend Him.
Now, to “grieve the Holy Spirit” means to cause Him emotional distress or pain, much like hurting a close friend who loves you deeply. The Holy Spirit can be grieved. Speaking of the children of Israel, the Bible says, “How oft did they provoke Him in the wilderness, and grieve Him in the desert!” (Psa. 78:40). When we sin, especially through bitterness, anger, malice, lying, gossip, or unforgiveness, we hurt (offend, upset) the Holy Spirit. Again, concerning the children of Israel, the Bible says, “But they rebelled, and vexed his Holy Spirit: therefore, He was turned to be their enemy, and He fought against them” (Isa 63:10). It is so important that we jealously guard our relationship with the Holy Spirit. May we receive the grace to PLEASE the Holy Spirit at all times, in the precious name of Jesus Christ.
