Deuteronomy 8:18 (KJV) “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth …”
This verse is part of Moses’ exhortation to Israel at the plains of Moab, just before they entered the Promised Land (Canaan). He warned them not to forget God once they began to prosper. But our focus from this text will be on the aspect of “the power to get wealth.” The LORD gives to His children, “the power to get WEALTH”, not just money or riches. Wealth in Scripture goes beyond money; it includes wisdom, favour, health, peace, and “the gift of men.” Riches speak of abundance of things, but not necessarily abundance of life. Riches are what you have; wealth is who you’ve become – empowered, wise, fruitful, and a channel of blessing. The “power” – strength, divine enablement, ability, capacity, capability, or competence – to produce, create, and sustain wealth comes from God. True wealth is sustainable because it aligns with God’s covenant and purpose. So, wealth is covenantal, generational, and holistic.
Now, the LORD God empowers His people to prosper so they can fulfil divine purpose – funding His work, advancing His Kingdom on earth, and blessing others. The LORD God said to Abraham, “I will bless thee ... and thou shalt be a blessing” (Gen 12:2). We are to be CHANNELS of blessings, not CONTAINERS. True wealth flows through you, not just to you. Again, the LORD God gives us the capacity, wisdom, favour, ideas, and opportunities to produce wealth, to fulfil His covenant purpose, not to chase money. When we are aligned with divine purpose, we tap into divine ideas and strategies that lead to productivity. We attract favour and resources because heaven sponsors its own assignments. In essence, purpose unlocks provision. That’s why Jesus said: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Mat. 6:33). The “Power to get wealth” is not merely the ability to make money, it is the divine authorization to fulfil purpose without financial limitation. Glory to God!
