Galatians 5:16 (KJV) “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
Our Scriptural text is part of Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians on the subject of “life under the Law” and “Life in the Spirit.” The believers in Galatia were being tempted to return to legalistic practices rather than living by faith and the leading of the Holy Spirit. So, in this text, Apostle Paul shows us another secret to walking in the path of purity: “Walking in the Spirit.” It is a key to living a victorious Christian life. The secret to overcome “the desires of the flesh” is not through self-effort or legalistic practices, but through walking in the Spirit.
Now, to “walk in the Spirit” means to live our daily life under the guidance, control, influence, and power of the Holy Spirit. Walking in the Spirit is not a one-time act but a continuous, daily journey, moment by moment, yielding to the Holy Spirit’s direction. It implies dependence on the Spirit, allowing Him to shape our thoughts, desires, and actions. When we walk in the Spirit, the Bible says, “Ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” The “flesh” refers to the fallen human nature with its sinful desires and tendencies. The “Lust of the flesh” includes not just immoral desires, but all cravings that oppose God’s will – pride, anger, selfishness, envy, etc. When we walk in the Spirit the desire of the flesh loses its power to dominate our lives.
Here are a few steps toward walking in the Spirit:
1. Daily Surrender: Begin each day inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your steps.
2. Word & Prayer: Feed your spirit with Scripture and communion with God.
3. Obedience: Respond quickly to the Spirit’s promptings.
4. Fellowship: Surround yourself with Spirit-led believers who encourage your growth.
Glory to God in the Highest! Have a blessed day, in Jesus precious name.
