Psalms 119:130 (KJV) “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
Understanding is synonymous to Light. The word, “understanding”, as derived from the Greek word, “sunesis”, means, “a mental putting together” of bits of information on a subject matter to form “meaning”. It can also be defined as “the knowledge of how something works”. Understanding is so important in our pursuits in life hence, the Bible says, “... with all thy getting get understanding” (Prov. 4:7; KJV). Another Bible versions put it this way, “... use everything you have to get understanding” (ERV). One important benefit of “understanding” is that “Good understanding giveth favour ...” (Prov. 13:15; KJV).
Now, it is the “unfolding” of God’s word that gives light or understanding (BSB). The Jubilee Bible Version (JUB) says, “The exposition of thy words gives light ...” We must crave for “divine light” that is, “divine understanding” that comes through an effective exposition of God’s word. This is one of the most important assignments of a pastor; to feed us with knowledge and understanding (Jer. 3:15). May the LORD grant grace to all our pastors to take seriously this assignment, and may the LORD grant us all, quick understanding, in Jesus’ name.
