Joh 12:20-21 (KJV) “And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast: [21] The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, WE WOULD SEE JESUS.”
According to our Scriptural passage, some Greek worshippers came to “seek” Jesus. They beseeched Philip saying, “we would see Jesus” or “we desire to see Jesus” (AFV) or “we are determined to see Jesus”. The Greek word translated “see” in our Scriptural passage is eidō. It could also mean, “to know”. The Greek worshippers were possibly saying also, “we desire to meet Jesus because we desire to know Him”. There are two important lessons to learn from this request of the Greek worshippers. The first is the need to have a constant burning desire “to see” or “to know Jesus”, that is, to constantly pursue an intimate relationship with Jesus. This is the most important pursuit in life.
The second lesson to learn from the statement of the Greek worshippers is the need to seek only Jesus Christ, not any other man. The request of the Greek worshippers to Philip can be restated as, “we RATHER want to see or know Jesus, not you, Philip.” Men can lead us to knowing Jesus, but they must not become our object of pursuit and worship. Beware of any man who seek to draw you to himself and not to Jesus Christ; men who preach about themselves, and not Christ Jesus. Seek only Jesus!
