Malachi 3:8-9 (KJV) “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. [9] Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.”
The Bible shows that neglecting tithing isn’t just about money; it’s a spiritual issue of trust, obedience, and covenant relationship with God. Refusing to tithe is an act of disobedience to God’s Command. The Bible teaches that refusing to tithe and give offerings is seen as robbing God (Mal. 3:8). Secondly, neglecting tithing can bring about a closed heaven for God’s covenant children. The LORD God promises to “open the windows of heaven” to faithful tithers (Mal. 3:10). Thirdly, without tithing, our resources may be wasted through unexpected losses, sickness, financial crises, or fruitless labour. Malachi 3:11 says God will rebuke the devourer for the sake of those who tithe and give offerings.
Now, tithing builds trust in God as provider (Deut. 8:18). Without tithing, one tends to rely on self, which leads to worry, anxiety, and lack of peace. Furthermore, in the Old Testament, the Levites lived on the tithes (Num. 18:21). Today, the church’s work (missions, care for the poor, ministers, etc.) is hindered when believers do not tithe faithfully and give offerings. Faithful stewardship leads to rewards (Mat. 25:21). Not tithing robs a believer of kingdom investment and eternal fruit.
